National Implementing Legislation
As mentioned earlier, the principal types of EU legislation include regulations, directives, decisions, recommendations and opinions. While regulations are directly applicable to member states, directives require legislative action on the part of each member country. National implementing legislation must be enacted to enforce the objective of a directive. In order to determine if national legislation has been enacted in response to EU legislation, the researcher has several aids.
- National Transposition (EUR-Lex)This section provides access to measures adopted by the EU Member States to transpose EU acts – mainly directives – into national law. It is updated weekly.
- Annual reports on monitoring the application of EU lawProvides access to the European Commission's annual reports on its monitoring of the application of EU law in response to requests from the European Parliament and the EU countries.
- Secretariat-General of the European CommissionThe Secretariat-General tracks legislative proposals submitted to the other EU institutions, aids in monitoring the implementation of EU-legislation in the member-states, help manage contacts between the EU and civil society. This page lists the legislative proposals in negotiation, the legislation currently being implemented and legislation currently in force in the member states.

- Westlaw EU materialsWestlaw's EU section contains materials relating to case law, legislation, originating treaties and regulations. The database includes EU treaties since 1951, legislation since 1952, preparatory acts since 1974, and parliamentary questions since 1992. Case law dates back to 1954 for the European Court of Justice and 1989 for the General Court (and its predecessor, The Court of First Instance). There is access to periodical articles, and updates of current awareness materials. Currency within the databases varies, but Westlaw generally updates within 24 hours of publication.
Commercial laws of Europe by Call Number: KJC2044.3 .C66Originally, this was a monthly publication of the important national legislation passed in Western Europe, including national legislation implementing EU directives and English translations of selected statutes. Beginning in 1990, the Commercial Laws of Europe became a yearly compilation. As part of the table of contents, volumes of this text include "E.C. Legislation Implemented", which chronologically lists the directive numbers and information relating to the tilte of the national legislation and the member country.
